Slow Cooker BBQ Ham Sandwiches
It was late on a Sunday morning and we were all busy doing Sunday stuff like mowing the lawn, catching up on laundry and meal planning and getting ready for the grocery shopping trip for the week. Before I start meal planning I always take a quick inventory of my pantry, freezer and refrigerator to see what meals I can come up with using items we already have on hand. This is also when I clean out the refrigerator of any food that may have gone bad and give the whole thing a quick wipe out.
While cleaning out the lunch-meat drawer I spotted a bag of 3 pounds of Black Forrest ham that my husband had bought for lunches for work but had forgotten about. I asked him if he was going to eat the ham or could I use it for a recipe and he said it was OK to just go ahead and make something with it.
So I decided to go ahead and make up some yummy BBQ ham sandwiches in the slow cooker for dinner that evening. I wasn’t really in the mood to cook a large meal and my kids always love anything with barbecue sauce in it so I knew it was going to be a winner in their book.
I threw a couple packages of rolls and some chips on the shopping list and I was ready to rock and roll.
This recipe only needs to cook a couple of hours because the ham is already cooked. So I waited until I was ready to go to the grocery store (early evening as it was starting to cool down for the day) to quickly put it together and in the crock-pot. I just chopped up the ham, doctored up a bottle of BBQ sauce with chili sauce, brown sugar, mustard powder, pepper and Worcestershire sauce and threw it all in my 5 quart slow cooker. Gave it a quick stir and turned the pot on to cook for a couple of hours. By the time I got home from the grocery store, got everything unpacked and put away it was time for dinner.
I made up sandwiches, threw some chips on the plate and we all took our dinner outside to the back patio to eat.
It was DELICIOUS.
If you are needing a quick and easy meal to feed your family for either lunch or dinner this one it is. Leftovers taste great all week long for sandwiches or wraps too…my husband can attest to that because while he forgot that ham for his lunches all week he sure did eat up the leftover BBQ ham for his lunches the following week!
A super quick and easy recipe that the whole family will love. Just a few simple ingredients and a couple hours cooking time is all you need in this great BBQ ham recipe cooked in your slow cooker!
In a large bowl, combine water, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and mustard; pour over ham and stir well. Cover and cook on low until heated through, 4-5 hours. Serve on buns.
A whole bone-in ham (19lbs average weight) serves up to 30 or 40 people. Definitely the right choice for family reunions and other big get-togethers. A whole boneless ham (6.7lbs average weight) serves roughly 25 people.
Buy bone-in ham. Yes, the bone is a little more work to cut around, but the meat is more flavorful and the hambone can be used to flavor soups and stews. Check the label. City hams can be artificially plumped up with water or solutions, but this dilutes the flavor, so look for one with no added water or juices.
With a spiral-cut ham, keep the slices packed together as much as possible and protect the ham from direct heat. To keep the end from drying out, place the ham cut-side down on a sheet of aluminum foil. This will help hold in the moisture while exposing the skin to the heat and flavor of the grill.
A half ham weighing between five and eight pounds requires 35 to 40 minutes of roasting at 325°F per pound. For whole bone-in hams weighing 12 and 16 pounds, cook the ham at 325°F for 22 to 26 minutes per pound. The internal temperature should be 145°F.
Once you've properly wrapped and frozen your leftover ham, you can keep it in a frost-free freezer for up to 2 months without loss of flavor. If you store it longer, it'll develop freezer burn, which is the meat drying out at the edges. The longer it stays in the freezer, the more freezer burn it will develop.
Again, you may want to buy a slightly larger whole spiral ham to ensure every one of your guests can go home with plenty of leftovers for sandwiches the next day.
Wondering how much deli meat you should order on your next visit? Here's a good rule of thumb: 1 pound of deli meat, sliced sandwich style, makes about 5 – 6 sandwiches. Cheese slices should be ordered thinner than deli meat, so you'll have more cheese slices to layer on. Order away!
