Omaha boxer Steven Nelson arrested in connection with shooting that injured teen (2024)

Omaha boxer Steven “So Cold” Nelson was arrested Thursday in connection with a March 31 shooting that injured a 14-year-old girl.

Police suspect Nelson, 35, of second-degree assault, two counts of first-degree assault, use of a gun to commit a felony and shooting at an occupied vehicle, according to the Omaha Police Department.

Nelson holds the WBO-NABO super middleweight title and has a 19-0 record with 15 knockouts. He is also the director of operations for B&B Sports Academy, according to its website.

About 2:13 a.m. March 31, police officers responded to 43rd and Ohio Streets for a report of a shooting. They found a 14-year-old girl with multiple gunshot wounds. She said she had been shot while riding in a stolen Chevrolet Silverado, according to an affidavit.

The girl told police she was present when the truck was stolen at 39th and Farnam Streets. Other occupants of the truck were a 13-year-old and 15-year-old boy, according to the affidavit.

The girl told investigators a white vehicle began following them and they fled in the truck before stopping in a concealed alleyway near North 35th Street and Hawthorne Avenue.

After they had been parked in the alley for 10 minutes, a Chevrolet Trax appeared and a man got out of the SUV, raised a handgun and fired multiple shots, hitting the girl and the truck, police said.

The stolen pickup then fled to 43rd and Ohio Streets, where the girl was found. She was taken to Nebraska Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Nelson told police he was at a restaurant at 39th and Farnam Streets and left his vehicle parked nearby, unlocked and with the keys inside, according to the affidavit.

When Nelson left the bar, he realized his car was missing and called relatives who picked him up in a car and drove to Nelson’s house, according to police records.

Nelson said he began tracking his work phone, which he had left in his truck and tracked it to 118th and Shirley Streets, where he found the truck and drove it home.

Once home, Nelson called police about 3:51 a.m. to report that he had recovered the truck.

Nelson admitted to moving the truck despite visible bullet defects and blood and to removing items from the truck before calling police, according to the affidavit.

Surveillance footage from outside the bar showed Nelson’s truck being stolen at 12:47 a.m., Nelson searching for the truck at 1:34 a.m. and Nelson being picked up in a white Chevrolet Trax at 1:45 a.m., according to the affidavit.
