The Strongest Characters in Invincible: Ranking the Viltrumites (2024)

One of the best parts of Invincible (by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley) is the massive power levels of its characters. As the original comic series progressed, the titular hero, Mark Grayson, was forced to become much stronger to compete against the foes he faced. And he still flat-out failed, or just barely succeeded, on more than one occasion. Ultimately, the end result was a chain of jaw-droppingly powerful characters with a hierarchy stretching to the skies.

The Viltrumites are a powerful species representing the series' strongest characters, including Invincible and his dad, Omni-Man. However, there are members of that alien race who are significantly stronger than the others. With the TV show adaptation garnering much-deserved attention, it's worth taking a closer look at the world of Invincible to break down who the strongest Viltrumites are.

Updated on September 1, 2024 by Christopher Raley: The success of the Invincible TV show has elevated its presence in pop culture. And while the comic series is finished, the show could potentially go on for several seasons. Many antagonists crop up in the show, but the Viltrumites are easily the strongest. This article has been updated with even more information and to conform to CBR's current publishing standards.

10 Invincible Storylines the Live-Action Movie Should Adapt

With Robert Kirkman and Skybound planning an Invincible movie, there are many compelling story arcs that are primed for a live-action adaptation.

Nolan Grayson explains the history of Viltrum in the Season 1 finale, informing Mark that he comes from a lineage of cosmic warriors. Nolan claims that the Viltrumites are among the strongest species in the known universe, which holds true mostly. Despite all the talk about Viltrum, the first Viltrumites who aren't the father-son duo don't appear until Season 2. Thula, Lucan, and Vidor are seen encountering and subsequently defeating Allen the Alien before going off on their hunt for Omni-Man. These three Viltrumites eventually go to Thraxa, attacking its populace mercilessly.

Invincible attempts to stop Lucan but cannot overpower him until Omni-Man arrives. After a brief but brutal battle, Omni-Man manages to disembowel Lucan. Later, Omni-Man and Invincible fight Vidor and Thula, respectively, defeating them. Then, Lucan emerges, severely injured but still alive, having called General Kregg to save his allies and capture Omni-Man. Thula and Lucan play similar roles in the original comic series, but Vidor is an original character created for the Amazon TV show. These three warriors are average Viltrumite soldiers, which explains their low ranking compared to other powerful warriors from Viltrum and Earth.

Intimidation

As the cast of Viltrumites expands, there have to be some who fall to the wayside as far less powerful than the main cast. Many of Thragg's half-Viltrumite children proved their fragility when they crumpled against full-blooded Viltrumites in battle. Even among the alien species' pure-blooded ranks, Omni-Man stands out as substantially more powerful than most of those he faces. However, one stands out even more thanks to her terrifying power: Anissa.

One of the strongest characters in Invincible, Anissa arrives at Earth to bring Mark in line with the Viltrumite Empire. Later, during the Viltrumite War, she will go toe-to-toe with Omni-Man. She sticks around through most of the comic series, although she is rarely seen being pushed to her limit. Overpowering Invincible and forcing herself on him in the controversial Invincible #110, Anissa's heinous act establishes her as one of the most chilling villains in the series. Given how Invincible's powers are fully developed, it's hard to deny that Anissa ranks among the top tier of her species.

Invincible's Most Brutal Scene Has Zero Punches

While the two seasons of Prime Video's Invincible had many horrific sequences, the one that felt most soul-crushing didn't even have a punch thrown.

As one of the generals leading the Viltrumite forces, Kregg is unquestionably one of the strongest of his kind. A character who looks like him can be seen during the Viltrumite Great Purge flashback scene in the Season 1 finale, standing victorious next to a pile of Viltrumite corpses. The only difference is Kregg lacks the cybernetic eye shown in Season 2. When Kregg appears on Thraxas, Omni-Man and Invincible are exhausted from battling Lucan, Thula, and Vidor, leaving them powerless to mount a counter-attack. Kregg lauds Invincible for fighting Thula and calls him a worthy warrior. He then declares that Omni-Man will be executed and orders Mark to finish his dad's job on Earth.

Kregg plays a relatively minor role in Part 2 of Season 2, where he's shown beating Omni-Man up in prison. Given his high status among the Viltrumites, it's no surprise that Kregg is strong but not as bloodthirsty as some of his contemporaries. He is calm and logical, preferring to win without unnecessary bloodshed. Nevertheless, Kregg partakes in several battles in the comic narrative. Over the course of the Viltrumite War, he fights Allen the Alien, Thaedus, and Space Racer. Kregg's battle with Allen is arguably the most explosive, but he receives help from Anissa and his peers to defeat the overpowered Unopan. Interestingly, Kregg later disguises himself as a human and begins living on Earth.

Charismatic leadership

One of the strongest Invincible characters, Omni-Man was not the peaceful protector of Earth that he pretended to be, and the unbelievable destruction created by his battle with Invincible really sold that gut-punching revelation. The confrontation between father and son turned into a brutal beatdown that became part of comic book history. There was a substantial amount of power on display in that epic showing, with the very first punch thrown by the elder Grayson cracking skyscrapers apart and leaving thousands dead.

However, Omni-Man seems guilty for his actions, as seen in Season 2: Part 1 when he tricks Mark into finding him on an alien planet. His subsequent fight with two overpowered enemies highlights his overwhelming strength. Omni-Man further establishes his superiority to most Viltrumites throughout the comic series, sometimes taking on two or three at a time without relenting. For most of the series, he is much stronger and faster than Invincible, constantly providing a higher bar for his heroic son to reach. However, Omni-Man is still outclassed by a few other Viltrumites.

10 Things You Didn't Know About the Invincible Multiverse

The Invincible comics have a multiverse that Mark Grayson's worst villains can access, though he once also found an ally in Marvel's Spider-Man.

Although the Invincible comic certainly has its share of violence and gore before his arrival, there are perhaps no more brutal and bloody combatants than Conquest. With a scar across his face and an arm replaced by a robotic prosthetic, Conquest leaves no doubts about his battle-tested bona fides. Since he was only injured by the Scourge Virus and even older than the multi-thousand-year-old Omni-Man, Conquest is among the most experienced and powerful Viltrumites in Invincible.

Given that he had never lost a planet in his thousands of years of life, there seems to be little possibility of fighting off Conquest when he arrives on Earth. After nearly killing Invincible, Atom Eve finally fells Conquest by going nuclear, her powers vaporizing half the conqueror. Even that won't be the end of him. Conquest escapes the 400 tons of metal encased around him only days later and has a rematch against Invincible that leaves the hero on the brink of death for months. Ultimately, Invincible outwits Conquest and wins their fight, but the victory is so narrow it easily could have gone the other way.

Limitless Potential

Invincible walks a long and bloody road. By the end of the series, there is no doubt that he has earned his spot as one of the most powerful Viltrumites in the universe. At the start of the series, Omni-Man can slap Invincible around the globe without sustaining a meaningful injury. But Invincible's powers grow over time, and he proves himself capable of fighting the best of the best among the Viltrumites as well as other villains. More importantly, Mark Grayson's relatively young age means he has limitless potential, especially since Viltrumites live for thousands of years.

Various statements signify Invincible's growing power compared to Omni-Man's, and in the wake of his defeating the legendary Conquest, it is clear that Invincible has surpassed his father. Notably, Omni-Man did win their arm-wrestling match toward the end of the series. Still, some ambiguity surrounds Invincible's distraction and whether he intentionally lost during the scene. Regardless, the hero's raw showings make him one of Invincible's strongest characters — only one Viltrumite outranks him in sheer physical power.

Unbreakable willpower

Without question, Grand Regent Thragg is the strongest Viltrumite on this list and one of the strongest Invincible characters. Claiming rule over all his people at the start of the series, the species' dogmatic philosophy of "might make right" speaks to just how strong Thragg needs to be to maintain his position. Believing in that philosophy more stringently than anyone else, the incredibly powerful villain proved time and again why he's the strongest being in the galaxy.

Other Viltrumites could hurt their hands just punching him, and the Grand Regent fights Battle Beast for days despite starting the duel with severe injuries. On three different occasions, he beats Omni-Man nearly to death, maiming him with his bare hands while sustaining little damage himself. In the end, even Invincible can not take him down alone, and it is only with the combined efforts of Robot and other environmental factors that Thragg endures a thorough defeat for the first time.
