Weardahl To her family and friends, Claryce E. Weardahl, 64, of Long Grove, was a true inspiration. For the past 22 years, Mrs. Weardahl had battled four different kinds of cancer. Most recently, she was diagnosed with bone and liver' cancer, which she fought for the past four years.

Born in Oberlin, Ohio, Mrs. Weardahl died Wednesday at her home. She also was the co-founder of the Chicago chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Association. Mrs. Weardahl was raised in Cleveland, and she earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Ohio University in Athens.

She briefly worked as an accountant at Republic Steel, a steel manufacturer in Cleveland, before she married Henry Weardahl, whom she had met in college, in 1956. After she married, Mrs. Weardahl focused on raising her family. She lived on the West Coast for many years before moving to Chicago in 1968. When her daughter, Erika Sweis, was born with diabetes in the late 1960s, Mrs.

Weardahl began looking for more information about the disease. With the assistance of other mothers, Mrs. Weardahl became the co-founder of the Juvenile Diabetes Association in the early 1970s and also served for two years as its president. "She felt there wasn't enough being done about diabetes," recalled her husband. In 1977, Mrs.

Weardahl was diagnosed with breast cancer. During the same time, she began working as a real estate agent for Century 21 in Arlington Heights. She worked for more than 20 years in the real estate industry. She retired in 1994 from Baird Warner in Arlington Heights, after she was diagnosed with liver cancer. For the past three years, Mrs.

Weardahl volunteered at Maple Hill Nursing Home in Long Grove, where she would visit and read to the elderly. A former resident of Mt. Prospect, Mrs. Weardahl spent the past few years traveling. "She was an unbelievable lady," said her husband.

"She was an inspiration," added her daughter Elizabeth Weardahl. "She truly had a good heart." Besides her husband and two daughters, she is survived by a son, Henry and a brother, Walter Hunter.
